After a user completes a workout and checks the results, the app interaction comes to a halt. There was a noticeable gap in organizing and planning future workouts, leaving users feeling a bit lost.
To address this issue, I began contemplating ways to enhance the app's utility during periods when users are not actively working out.
Back then, the app lacked a workout planner, leading to user frustration as they couldn't build and plan their next workout. To overcome this, users attempted to fill the gap by combining the impressive workout tracking of the Atlon app with another workout planner/builder app.
Recognizing the chance to engage users beyond workout tracking, we aimed to offer an in-house solution for the workout builder. By integrating it with a tracking algorithm, we aimed to enhance workout results and provide users with a comprehensive pre and post-workout experience. This approach not only introduces a valuable feature but also empowers users with greater control over their workout routine.
I interviewed our beta users to try to discover the pain points in the app.
I conducted an analysis of various workout builders and planners that our users were using alongside Atlon.
Using the research findings and user data, the assumptions were formulated about the features and organized them based on their perceived importance.
I mapped-out all potential user journeys for a CrossFit-related workout builder, encompassing various types of CrossFit workouts.
First iteration
Testing
The initial design was crafted and internally tested. Following the creation of high-fidelity mockups, we brought them into the real world for the test.
After countless tests and design iterations, I came to the final solution that shipped we to the app store.
Once "booked", the guided workout becomes accessible on the Apple Watch. Upon completing a segment, users seamlessly proceed to the next segment in their planned workout routine.
We saw a 48% increase in user retention. Users stayed longer in the app, and 85% of active users built and scheduled more than 3 workouts with Atlon’s workout builder.
